Day 1: Arrival and Journey to Volcanoes National Park

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome from our English-speaking guide, who will pick you up from your hotel or the airport in Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital. Known as one of the cleanest cities in Africa, Kigali will impress you with its tidy streets, modern infrastructure, and the resilience of its people. As you drive through the city, you’ll witness firsthand the hard work and dedication that have gone into making Kigali a shining example of urban organization and cleanliness.

Your first stop will be the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a solemn site dedicated to the memory of the more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. This powerful memorial serves as a reminder of the country’s tragic past and the remarkable journey of recovery and unity that has followed. Walking through the exhibits, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history and the strength of its people. This visit is a deeply moving experience that sets the stage for appreciating the resilience and spirit of this nation.

After this poignant visit, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, offering you a taste of Rwandan cuisine. Savor the flavors of the region as you prepare for the journey ahead.

Post-lunch, the adventure continues as we embark on a scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park, located in the northwestern part of the country. The park is renowned for its lush landscapes, towering volcanoes, and as the habitat of the endangered mountain gorillas. The journey to the park is an experience in itself, as you traverse rolling hills and verdant valleys, offering glimpses of Rwanda’s natural beauty. Along the way, you’ll see rural villages, terraced farmlands, and the everyday life of the local people.

Upon arrival at the park, you’ll check into one of the charming lodges that overlook the park, providing stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. The lodges are thoughtfully designed to blend into the natural environment, offering comfort and tranquility. In the evening, unwind at the lodge, soaking in the serene atmosphere and preparing for the excitement of the next day. Enjoy a hearty dinner featuring local and international cuisine and take in the views of the starlit sky above the volcanic peaks.

Day 2 : Gorilla Trekking and Exploring Dian Fossey’s Legacy

The second day of your journey starts with an early morning breakfast at the lodge. The excitement of the day ahead fills the air as you prepare yourself for the once-in-a-lifetime experience of meeting the mountain gorillas. After breakfast, we drive you to the park headquarters, where you’ll be briefed on the rules and guidelines for gorilla trekking. This orientation is essential for ensuring the safety of both visitors and the gorillas, who are highly protected due to their endangered status.

Once the briefing is complete, your gorilla trek begins. Accompanied by a trained guide and trackers, you’ll hike through dense forests, bamboo thickets, and rugged terrain, gradually making your way to the gorillas’ habitat. The trek can vary in duration and difficulty depending on the location of the gorilla families on that particular day, but every step of the journey is a thrilling adventure. The anticipation builds as you move closer to these gentle giants, who share 98% of their DNA with humans.

Finally, you reach your destination: a gorilla family in their natural habitat. Observing these magnificent creatures up close is an awe-inspiring experience. Watch as they play, feed, and interact with each other, exhibiting behaviors and emotions that are strikingly similar to our own. You’ll have an hour to spend with the gorillas, allowing ample time to capture photos and simply marvel at their presence. This intimate encounter with the mountain gorillas is not just a wildlife experience; it’s a profound connection with one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.

After your time with the gorillas, the trek back to the starting point will be filled with reflections on the unforgettable experience. Upon returning, you’ll visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Museum, dedicated to the legacy of Dian Fossey, a pioneering primatologist who dedicated her life to studying and protecting these gorillas. The museum offers insights into her groundbreaking work and the ongoing conservation efforts to ensure the survival of these majestic animals. Learning about Fossey’s life and the challenges she faced adds a deeper layer of appreciation for the conservation journey.

Following the museum visit, you’ll begin your return journey to Kigali. As you drive back, you’ll pass through Rwanda’s stunning landscapes, earning its nickname as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” The rolling green hills, interspersed with banana plantations, coffee farms, and quaint villages, create a picturesque backdrop for your drive. It’s a scenic journey that showcases the natural beauty and diversity of Rwanda’s terrain.

As your 2-day gorilla experience comes to an end, you’ll arrive back in Kigali with a heart full of memories and a deeper appreciation for Rwanda’s wildlife and heritage. We hope that this journey not only met but exceeded your expectations, providing you with a unique insight into the wonders of Rwanda and its incredible mountain gorillas.
