Volcanoes National Park is one of Rwanda’s most popular tourist attractions, best known for its gorilla trekking experiences. Located in the Virunga Mountains, this 160 km² park is home to endangered mountain gorillas that thrive on the slopes of five iconic volcanoes: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Gahinga, Muhabura, and Sabyinyo. The park’s diverse vegetation provides an excellent habitat for these primates, with bamboo shoots being their primary food source.
The highlight of visiting Volcanoes National Park is undoubtedly gorilla trekking. To participate in this unique adventure, tourists must obtain a gorilla trekking permit from the Rwanda Development Board, priced at $1,500 per person per trek. There are 13 habituated gorilla families available for trekking, with only eight permits issued per family each day to minimize human impact on their environment.
In the 1980s, mountain gorillas faced near extinction due to poaching and habitat destruction, with only about 250 individuals remaining. Conservation efforts, largely pioneered by Dian Fossey, helped protect and increase their numbers. Today, gorilla trekking remains one of the most thrilling and conservation-focused activities in Africa.
While gorilla trekking is the most popular activity, the park offers a range of other experiences:
Golden monkeys, scientifically known as Cercopithecus mitis kandti, are an endangered species found in the Virunga region. Trekking to see these active and playful primates costs $100 per person per trek.
The park is a birding paradise with over 90 bird species, including 13 Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori Turaco, Archer’s Robin-chat, and Shelley’s Crimson-wing. The diverse landscape makes it an excellent location for birdwatchers.
Visitors can challenge themselves with day hikes up the park’s five volcanoes. Each mountain offers breathtaking views and unique ecosystems:
Mount Karisimbi (4,507m) – the highest in Rwanda.
Mount Bisoke – famous for its crater lake.
Mount Sabyinyo – known for its rugged terrain.
Mount Gahinga & Mount Muhabura – provide scenic hiking routes.
Dian Fossey, a renowned primatologist, dedicated her life to gorilla conservation. She was murdered in 1985, and her grave remains a popular site for visitors interested in gorilla conservation history.
Before heading to the park, take a Kigali City Tour to explore Rwanda’s capital. Key sites include:
Kigali Genocide Memorial – a tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide.
Gisozi Genocide Memorial – an educational center about Rwanda’s history.
Local Markets & Museums – for cultural immersion.
